“Stories are the secret reservoir of values: change the stories individuals and nations live by and tell themselves, and you change the individuals and nations.” – Ben Okri, Nigerian poet and novelist
A movement toward integration draws its inspiration and momentum from the voices of and stories about teachers, students, school administrators, ministers and priests, parents, city planners and mayors working to build community all across the nation. Their work represents the possibility of an America truly indivisible. Often working in a larger context of marginalization, segregation and division, these ordinary, often non-ideological people have chosen to pursue a rich, democratic and truly American way of life that respects and celebrates our differences, our commonalities and our shared fates.
The people who embody the values underlying integration efforts live and work and learn in cities, small towns, rural communities and suburbs all across America.
